Gearboxes - What's right for you?
Picking a gearbox for your next build? Here are some factors that you should consider!

Introduction
The gearbox is the heart of your gel blaster. It influences firing response, rate of fire, FPS consistency, maintenance requirements, and the overall feel of every trigger pull.
At BBGB, two of the most common gearbox systems found across our competition-grade builds are the ATM MAX Blowback System and the v2 Gearbox System. Both are highly capable platforms, but they are designed for very different playstyles.
This guide breaks down their key features, strengths, limitations, and who each system is best suited for.
ATM MAX Blowback System
For players who value realism and an immersive shooting experience, the ATM MAX Blowback System is the natural choice.
Our ATM MAX system features a reinforced nylon lower assembly with upgraded electronics and a reinforced sector gear to improve durability and firing response. Its defining feature is the upper assembly: a reciprocating metal bolt that cycles during operation, simulating a chambering action and delivering the signature blowback experience.
The ATM MAX system also includes functional controls inspired by real-world platforms. When the magazine is empty or when a gel misfeeds due to incorrect gel sizing, the bolt can lock back. This gives the bolt release and charging handle a functional role rather than serving as purely aesthetic components.
While the system is designed for stable FPS and grouping with minimal tuning, its moving upper assembly requires more regular servicing. Fortunately, maintenance is straightforward with basic care.
Watch our ATM MAX servicing guide here
Pros
Realistic blowback firing action
Functional bolt release and charging handle
Stable FPS and grouping with minimal tuning
Simple, straightforward servicing
Strong performance straight out of the box
Considerations
Slightly lower rate of fire than most v2 systems
Requires more frequent upper assembly servicing
More power-hungry and may require a battery swap earlier in the day
Not compatible with glow-in-the-dark tracer gels
Best for: MilSim players, realism-focused builds, and players who prioritize stable performance with minimal tuning.
v2 system
v2 gearboxes are for those who seek versatility and purely raw performance. Unlike its ATM cousin, the v2 gearboxes do not feature a reciprocating bolt; instead, they rely on an AEB-style system and are available in nylon or machined alloy. Thanks to this, the v2 can achieve much higher rates of fire, FPS and longer servicing intervals due to a much more efficient core design at the cost of significantly less realism, as you lose blowback sensation and peripherals such as bolt releases and charging handles become purely aesthetic. While v2's can offer greater performance on paper, the performance can be erratic if tuned incorrectly.
Pros:
Potentially higher FPS and ROF
Longer service intervals
Less power hungry
Wide tuning window
Can use both hard compound and GITD rounds
Considerations:
Erratic performance if poorly tuned
Little to no realistic firing experience
Can be difficult to service for newer players
Which gearbox is right for you?
Both the ATM MAX and v2 systems are refined, highly capable platforms. The right choice ultimately depends on how you play.
Players focused on Speedgel or tournament-style gameplay often favor the v2 gearbox for its faster response, higher performance potential, longer servicing intervals, and compatibility with glow-in-the-dark tracer gels.
Players who enjoy MilSim, immersive gameplay, and the satisfaction of a functioning bolt system may prefer the ATM MAX Blowback System. Its realistic cycling action, functional controls, and stable out-of-the-box performance make it an excellent choice for players who value experience as much as performance.
