A hop-up is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the consistency, grouping, and effective range of your gel blaster. In this guide, we’ll explain how hop-up systems work and break down the three main options currently used across our builds.

At BBGB, hop-ups generally come in two forms: integrated directly into the inner barrel or as an external unit fitted to the end of the barrel.

As a gel ball passes through the hop-up, the unit applies backspin to the projectile. This influences its flight path and can help improve effective range and shot consistency when correctly matched to your blaster, gels, and barrel setup.

So, which system should you choose? Let’s take a look at the three main hop-up options we use in 2026.

The Integrated Hop-Up Barrel combines the inner barrel and hop-up into a single streamlined assembly.

At the end of the barrel sits a CNC-machined backspin plate, which can be adjusted using a 1.5 mm grub screw. This gives users a broad adjustment range while maintaining a considerably slimmer profile than many conventional external hop-ups.

It is an excellent all-round option for players who want the ability to fine-tune their setup without adding excessive bulk to the front of their blaster.

Best suited for: ATM, V2, and V3 systems.

1. Integrated Hop-Up Barrel

2. GP Barrel 7.3mm

The GP Barrel takes a much simpler approach. A small, hardened rubber nub is permanently positioned inside a 7.3mm tightbore barrel to apply backspin as the gel passes through. With no external adjustment mechanism or loose components, the system is particularly well suited to ATM blowback platforms, where repeated cycling may cause components to rattle loose.

Its greatest strengths are simplicity, durability, and an extremely clean profile. The trade-off is that the amount of hop is fixed and cannot be adjusted by the user. For players who want a fit-it-and-forget-it setup, the GP Barrel is one of our simplest options.

Best suited for: ATM blowback or similar systems.

3. Slimline V2 — 2026 ver.

The Slimline V2 is our external hop-up solution designed for standard 9.5 mm OD barrels. Its operating principle is similar to the Integrated Hop-Up Barrel, but it uses a plastic core rather than a CNC-machined component to keep the system affordable and accessible.

The Slimline can be used in its standard configuration or adjusted to increase the amount of hop applied to the gel. Its compact profile also allows it to fit inside many outer-barrel shrouds, making it a good option for players who want the quick transfer perks of an external hop-up without an oversized unit hanging from the front of their build.

Best suited for: Players using standard 9.5 mm OD barrels on any platform who want an affordable and compact external hop-up.

So, Which Hop-Up Should You Choose?

There is no single hop-up that is automatically best for every blaster.

If you want maximum adjustability, the Integrated Hop-Up Barrel is the strongest all-round choice. If you prioritize simplicity, durability and minimal maintenance, particularly on an ATM build, the GP Barrel makes a great fit. For players looking for a versatile and affordable external option, the Slimline v2 offers plenty of flexibility without adding unnecessary bulk.

Ultimately, the best hop-up is the one that complements the rest of your setup. Barrel dimensions, gel sizing, and your blaster's characteristics all play a role in how the system performs.

A hop-up may be a small component, but when the rest of your setup is dialled in, it can make a noticeable difference to how consistently your blaster performs.
